I'd also note that the pattern on the flags is quite abstract. Many
national flags are abstract so that may not be saying much. Could we
expect the people making them to know what they are?

I remember the hooha about some trendy bags that had amongst other
symbols on them the swastika. It wasn't the big bold right angled black
lines but the more curvy one with dots in the gaps, in other words the
Hindu symbol of good fortune. A symbol is what you recognise it as.
