Prune Properly
" Prune only dead, diseased, broken, or crossing branches on young
trees. Never remove more than 20% to 25% of the canopy in any one year=96
remember that a tree feeds itselfthrough the photosynthesis performed
in its leaves. Prune to a branch collar when removing a branch to aid
the treein healing the wound. Train a tree through pruning care-fully
to be sound and structurally strong in order to with-stand windstorms
and other events. Use sharp pruningtools and take care of them; wound
dressings are unneces-sary. Learn to recognize good pruning practices.
If youneed to hire an arborist, ask for references and check
them....and never NEVER top a tree! As with many of the most wonderful
things in life, thoughtful preparation and consistent aftercare are
critical to successful tree planting. "
