Friend Yowie,
It's good to see you are still interested in quakerism, George Fox's
unusual and uncompromising approach to the Christian faith.
A recent interest of mine in line with my substantial Quaker
background was to investigate seriously whether human
violence is hard-wired from the paleolithic to modern times.
Since you have a scientific mind, you might appreciate ---
Raymond Kelly
http://www.pubmedcentral.nih.gov/articlerender.fcgi?artid=3D1266108
"Recent findings and analyses in evolutionary biology, archaeology,
and ethnology provide a favorable conjuncture for examining the
evolution of lethal intergroup violence among hominids during the
2.9-million-year Paleolithic time span." This opening sentence
showed me that Kelly has a satisfactory insight into the violence
question for humans on whether it is inherent and how genetic,
instinctual, or hard-wired factors may be over-ridden.
"The evolution of lethal intergroup violence thus encomp***** three
major periods: (i) the era of coalitionary killing, (ii) the era of
intrinsic defensive advantage, and (iii) the era of war. An advance
in weapons technology (the javelin-like throwing spear) engenders
the first transition, whereas an advance in military organization and
tactics produces the second."
I definitely recommend everyone read Kelly's entire paper.
