"playing with"

by "Yowie" <yowie9644.DIESPAMDIE@[EMAIL PROTECTED] > Apr 9, 2008 at 12:28 PM

It seems perhaps this phrase is not being understood as I intended.

I do not mean 'toying with', (I would have said that if thats what I had
meant). I meant "playing with" as "interacting with another for personal
amusement, rather than to promote discussion, exchange of ideas, serious
communication, uplifting of spirit, edification of the self and community,

as is normal and expected behaviour for discussion forums on a particualr
topic". Such conversations tend to only invove two people, back and forth,

with little or no regard for the rest of the newsgroup's denizens or its
subject matter.

For example, in the group 'alt.cats.chronicrenalfailure' two people who
are
only engaged in arguing with each other rather than joining in the overall

discussion of chronic renal failure in cats would be 'playing with' each
other, rather than contributing to the newsgroup at large.

Hope that helps.

Yowie
