Avalon Rising CD by Avalon Rising © 1995 (available from
www.flowinglass.com) $17.50
It seems appropriate to be doing a review of a Celtic rock band this month
(since St. Patrick's Day is only a few days away).
I had only heard on of their songs before (on a compilation CD - "The Best
of Pagan Song" [ www.serpentinemusic.com ]) and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
I freely admit to being a devotee of music that tells an intelligible
story,
whether through vocals or instrumentation. The songs in this disc do
that.
The stories are varied, from the cold North to a night-shrouded forest.
The
instruments and vocals complement each other, they don't compete.
We are fortunate that there exist small, independent operations, run by
Pagans, who are dedicated to providing us with music we won't find in
every
big store (although it would be nice to see a better representation of our
interests there).
If you enjoy well-composed, well-played Pagan Music it is up to you to see
to it that these "mom and pop" operations continue to exist. It is up to
all of us to spread the word about them. We need to make it possible for
them to cater to our (relatively) small market share.
I urge you to go to their website (www.flowinglass.com) and purchase this
album and others (see my upcoming reviews of several more of their
offerings).
There was only none drawback to this album to my way of thinking - it
wasn't
long enough. I would have loved a double-disc set. I was definitely left
wanting more. Of course, that does give one the incentive to buy more
music
from these fine folks, and I fully recommend that you do so.
