Lokisday

by magentashadow@[EMAIL PROTECTED] (Terry McCombs) Feb 26, 2008 at 06:42 PM

Here's a new one on me, but then it seems it's a new one.

I was looking for something else and came across this article about to
be deleted from Wikipedia.

QUOTE

Lokisday Movement

The Lokisday Movement is an attempt to create and popularize an
alternate name for the final day of the week commonly called Saturday.

The idea was first proposed by Alan Lohff in February of 2008. The main
reason for the desired change comes from the origin of Saturday's name.

The name of Saturday comes from the Roman deity Saturn. With the
exception of Saturday all days of the week on the English-calendar are
based on Germanic deities. **

Lokisday on the other hand is derived from the phrase Loki's day in
reference to the Norse god Loki.

The replacement of Saturday with Lokisday fulfills the trend in the
weekday etymologies and recognizes the im****tance of Loki in Norse
mythology along with other deities such as Thor, after whom Thursday is
named, and Tyr, from whose name we get Tuesday.

The placement of Lokisday on the last day of the week bears extra
significance for the large part Loki was to play in Ragnarök. In two
out of three ****tents of Ragnarök Loki is the primary instigator. The
placement of Lokisday on the last day of the week is then symbolic of
the end of the world scenario in Norse mythology with Lokisday ushering
in the end of the week as Loki ushered in the end of the world.

There is not much history of Lokisday and it is mainly a new occurrence,
but there is some evidence that it was once used before it was replaced
by Saturday lending extra credence to the existence of the name
Lokisday.

END QUOTE

** Well, 4 days are named for Norse deities in English, Monday comes
from montag (Moon Day,) and Sunday, well, Sunday is easy to figure out.

One thing the unknown author of the above piece didn't get however is
that it's said by some that the original meaning of Loki's name meant
"lock" "tie down" or "end."
