Mormon scolars see two kings Mosiah. The Grandfather and the
grandson. With a king Benjamin between.

"The history of Mosiah I is limited to Amaleki's account in the Book
of Omni.Following a period of "much war and contention between...the
Nephites, and the Lamanites", Mosiah1 was "warned of the Lord that he
should flee out of the land of Nephi, and as many as would hearken
unto the voice of the Lord should also depart out of the land with
him, into the wilderness" . The journey led them to the land of
Zarahemla, inhabited by a group of people who had come from Jerusalem
at the"time that Zedekiah, king of Judah, was carried away captive
into Babylon". The two groups united and appointed Mosiah their
king.Mosiah I also translated engravings found on a stone which gave
an account of the Jaredites, another people who had previously
inhabited the area".

According to the Book of Mormon, Mosiah II, King Benjamin's son and
Mosiah I's grandson, was king of the Nephite nation from about 124 BC
to 91 BC. The Book of Mosiah is named after Mosiah II.
But in my opinion both were the same, as they both had the gift and
power Gods for languages. This match was known from the beginning of
the church, as the name of king Benjamin was altered into Mosiah in
later editions.
"Omni 1:20": 20 And it came to pass in the days of Mosiah, there
was a large stone brought unto him with engravings on it; and he did
interpret the engravings by the gift and power of God.
Mosiah 28
[11] Therefore he took the records which were engraven on the plates
of brass, and also the plates of Nephi, and all the things which hehad
kept and preserved according to the commandments of God, after having
translated and caused to be written the records which were on the
plates of gold which had been found by the people of Limhi, which were
delivered to him by the hand of Limhi; [13] And now he translated them
by the means of those two stones whichwere fastened into the two rims
of a bow.
Now there was in real old world history a king Mithridates 6 of Pont,
who spoke fluently 25 languages.
Like Mosiah 1 in Omni, Mithridates 6, fled as boy after the murder of
his father, to the Crimea and was raised by sheppards. At that time
100bC the Crimea had a big Jeish community and several synagoges.
The records of Ether, found by Limhi, who in my opinion was Arsaces
the Parth, were the rock inscriptions of Xerxes of Persa. Mithridates
6, claimed to be a descend from as well of Alexander the Great as well
of the Persian kings Cyrus and Xerxes.
The confusion of two kings with the same name is known in history as
well from the coins of the Bos****an kingdom on the Crimea, where
Mithridates ruled two times, with his son between.
(Wikipedia-Mithridates 6)
But still, Mithridates was not dispirited. Early in 65, he reached
his
possessions north of the Black Sea, which were governed by his son
Machares. The latter was not willing to take up arms against the
Romans -after all, Lucullus had recognized him- and was therefore
killed by his father, who was still hoping to build an army of
Scythian and Thracian horsemen, and wanted to invade Rome's
possessions on the Balkans. However, his luck was now running out.
Hisson Pharnaces revolted and gained sup****t of the last soldiers that
were loyal to Mithridates. He committed suicide, and was later buried
in Sinope, the capital of the kingdom he had lost.
So it looks like we have indentified king Benjamin as the historical
king Machares of the Bos****an Kingdom.
However Machares was the oldest son and Pharnaces the youngest - the
Benjamin.
