I suppose you are probably thinking about the "King Follet Sermon."
President Hinkley (then 1st counselor in the 1st presidency) quoted
from that in general conference in 1994, see

The same doctrine of becoming gods is also included in the current
priesthood/Relief Society manual on page 221 where it quotes the
canon.  And King Follet is mentioned on page 174 though that part does
not get into the godhood issue.

I can't see that they are trying to hide it that issue.
