Many on this list know that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints
"Mormons" has been teaching food storage at home. For the last 100 years
or
so. Some of my food storage Yahoo lists, they have discussed price hikes,
and shortages. I wasn't sure how true the rumors are.
While I was on the way back from a job, yesterday, I visited
the LDS cannery near me. The church grows many food items such as wheat
and
rice. Using much volunteer labor, and so the price is very low. For the 15
years I've been a member of the church, the cannery has had a plentiful
supply of wheat, and other food items to purchase.
I wanted to check on the food shortage concept. Any truth to the rumor?
When I arrived, I chatted
with the storehouse manager. He tells me that the wheat has been sold out
for a while. They also sold out of instant potatos called potato pearls,
and
several other items. The next supply is second week of April, and there
are
hundreds of folks telephoning the Storehouse to see whent he resupply
comes
in. In the half hour I was there, he answered perhaps a dozen or twenty
phone calls. All of them asking about the availability of wheat. There is
simply not a single grain of wheat at the local cannery. None. Empty
shelf.
I'm told that there was trouble with the wheat crop this year. Not as much
harvest. Many farmers are also switching to corn, to sell for ethanol
production.
My advice to you all. Buy wheat and flour, if you can find it. If you can
use it for cooking. It's not likely to go down in price. Also, mentally
prepare for serious price hikes in wheat based food. The Wegmans 99 cent
loaf of bread went to 1.19 in two weeks. Pizza, macaroni, spaghetti,
bread,
cake, pretzels. Wheat based. All gonna go up. Buy now, or pay more later.
