It is my understanding that originally the WOW was not so much a
commandment
as it was a guide for living. That the Saints were more or less eased
into
living with the WOW because the lifestyle changes would have initially
been
difficult to adjust to.
I remember when GBH was interviewed on 60 Minutes and they were rattling
off
different things from which we abstain. Following each he said something
like "Right!" When Mike Wallace said, cola drinks? He replied, "Right!"
He did so with the same inflection and conviction as he did every other
item
mentioned. It just told me that the Lord isn't kidding when he wants us
to
avoid something. It was right at that moment I chose to give up my Pepsi.
Like the other things mentioned in the WOW it is a distinct possiblity
that
cola drinks MAY someday be part of the temple recommend interview. I
decided not to wait till that happens and get over that part of my diet
early.
On another note: I cringe when I hear people equate coffee, tea and cola
drinks with some extrapolated commandment to avoid caffeine. Nowhere do I
see where the commandment is to abstain from caffeine. So I don't drink
decaffinated cola either.

And I would agree with you.
