I think you are making this more ambiguous than is really necessary...

This probably has to do with religion.  I don't think one religion is
trying to slaughter another, but most religions do carry with them the
notion that one will be more successful than others.  This same notion
doesn't necessarily apply interdenominationally (that is between
deonominations within a religion there is not so much tension).  For
example I know this Muslim couple.  They are very nice people and we
get along fine.  But at the end of the day I can't shake this notion
that something separates us.
