I have never seen any published material on this subject.

I have been researching the old genealogies and observed how many
cousin marriages there were. Of course, we are talking about a
relatively small community - but not that small.

I made my comment in my post without referring back to my data and I
am not even sure whether I meant cross-cousin or parallel-cousin
marriage. Sorry about that but Google groups tempts one to speak
without checking.

In any case the pattern of cousin marriage was not obligatory. Only
preferential.

One example that caught my eye early on is the fact that Abu Sufyan
and Hind, the parents of Mu'awiya, were cousins. Second cousins I
believe. Abu Sufyan appears to have inherited Hind, the daughter of
the previous chief of the Abd Shams (or Ummayya) along with chiefdom
when Utba was killed (traditionally just before the battle of Badr).
This, of course, is an inferior example because of the other factors
involved.

The old genealogies appear to be less reliable than one might hope
for. But Mu'awiya was prominent enough that his genealogy is probably
accurate at least for a few generations back.
