structure of possible NT hymns

by rtdavide@[EMAIL PROTECTED] Mar 17, 2008 at 12:19 AM

There are thought to be several hymns perhaps captured in the NT:
possibly Colossians 1:15-20, Philippians 2:6-11 and maybe 1 Timothy
3:16...

I have tried in vain to google the greek structure of these supposed
hymns. There are plenty of devotional thoughts on the meaning of the
passages, there are plenty of debates about the context of the
passages, and there are plenty of articles debating whether or not
they are actually hymns.

But I have seen very little reasoning of WHY these passages would have
been considered possible hymns in the first place. I have little doubt
that the information is out there somewhere, i just can't seem to find
it. Anyone have any knowledge of these passages structure and what
would precisely cause one to think in terms of them being a hymn?

are there certain phrasings or syllable counts or other devices that
were known to music or poetic stanzas that are applicable here?

Just for thoroughness, i'm going to include the passages and my greek
transliteration. accents are where i believe the stress falls on the
words, and the transliteration does it's best to mimic the sound of
the greek words as an english speaker might read them, granting
certain differences in the two languages. ch =3D chi, and I didn't
transliterate omicron to an ah sound, but left it as oh.

Who in the form of God subsisting
Not robbery deemed it
To be equal with God
But himself emptied
The form of a slave taking
In likeness of men becoming
And in fashion being found as a man
He humbled himself
Becoming obedient unto death
Death on a cross
Wherefore also God highly exalted him
And gave to him the name
Above every name
In order that the name of Jesus
Every knee should bow
Those in heaven and earth and those under the earth
And every tongue should acknowledge that
Lord Jesus Christ
To the glory of God the Father

who is
image of the invisible God,
firstborn over all creation.
because
in him were created all things:
in the heavens and on the earth,
the visible and the invisible,
whether thrones
or powers
or rulers
or authorities;
all things by him and for him were created.

and He is before all things,
and in him all things hold together.
and he is the head of the body, the church;

who is
the beginning
firstborn from among the dead,
so that in everything he might have the supremacy.
because
in him was pleased to have all the fullness dwell,
and through him to reconcile to himself all things,
by making peace
through
his blood, shed on the cross.
whether things on earth
or things in heaven
