Gary, Gary!
Do think about it! Go on from vs. 10! Go on to vss 11 and 12!
Do you think that the instant you became a Child of God through faith,
given to you by Him, that you ceased doing any of those things that
you had previously been doing? I hope, in view of 1 John 1:8, etc,
etc, etc, etc, your answer is the correct "no!" Did even the Apostle
Paul? I hope, in view of Romans 7, your answer is the correct "no!"
Because I hope you would never call God a liar; nor that you would
ever flout your self-righteousness above us other millions of
Christians who are having real struggles with sin, as Paul was.
In my own life, many years of damage and retardation were caused by
that kind of rot coming out of the "churches" I was attending. =20
Vss 11 and 12 imply (1) , with the whole point of the chapter, that
the possibility that a Believer is yet doing these things is more than
very real. Otherwise, what's the point of telling them not to do them
(cp Eph. 2:2-7, Col 3:5-6 for similar thought. Dr Barnhouse well
said, "Any time you want to know what Christians are capable of doing,
read what the Bible tells Christians not to do. I have had 3 murders
confessed to me during my ministry")? and (2) point to the solution,
as Paul did, in Romans 7:17: "It is no more I that do it, but sin that
dwelleth in me." As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he
separated us from our sins. =20
That is the essence of the Gospel!!!
But then, what about Romans 6, where "sin shall not have dominion over
you"???
I wish I fully understood the answer to that one! Paul very clearly
implied in Romans 7 (as I understand verse after verse after verse
there) that sin overpowered him. And vs. 25 indicated that that was
the way it was going to continue until the Rapture.
I've got about 20 commentataries, and as far as I'm concerned, not one
of them really hits on the answer to that one. Few even try.
But not understanding one verse in no way nullifies what numerous
other passages are clearly saying.
BTW, if anyone (who's saved) feels confident with their answer to the
seeming conflict between Rom 6 and Rom 7, please come across!
