The article by Paul Graham at http://www.paulgraham.com/disagree.html
is
a short introduction on how to disagree well. Since there is so much of
it in this forum, we might do well to adopt his nomenclature for a
hierarchy of disagreements:
DH0. Name-calling
DH1. Ad Hominem
DH2. Responding to Tone
DH3. Contradiction
DH4. Counterargument.
DH5. Refutation
DH6. Refuting the Central Point.
(I would sumbit that there needs to be "DH2.5. Denial", which is a
weaker form of DH3. Contradiction. Denial is a response of the form
"No, it isn't", without any additional sup****ting evidence.)
Anything below DH4 could be labelled and dismissed with no need for any
further discussion; DH4 could be entertained or not as the correspondent
desires; DH5 and DH6 ought to be given thoughtful consideration.)
