Hello.
Reading 2 Chronicles 21 this morning, the story of bad king Jehoram of
Judah. What a blood-thirsty guy.
Anyway, while he is wreaking havoc on the religious life of his people and
destroying his family, we see he gets a letter from Elijah the prophet. I
immediately assume this is the Elijah who spends most of his time in the
northern kingdom laying down the law to Ahab & Jezebel.
Now I understand the book of 2 Kings indicates Elijah is "taken up" during
the reign of Jehoshaphat--Jehoram's dad.
After doing just a bit of cursory research, I think there are three
possibilities to resolving this dilemma, and wonder if there are more. I
welcome anyone to respond and tell me which, if any, of these they
subscribe
to...or if there is a possibility I haven't thought about.
Explanations:
1. The Elijah in 2 Chronicles 21 is a different Elijah than the one in 2
Kings.
2. The Elijahs are the same...but in 2 Kings, we misunderstand the "taken
up" reference in regard to the prophet...he hasn't disappeared into the
heavens. Elijah is still on earth, and is peaceful living out his last
days. His letter to Jehoram is a rare "public statement" by the aged
prophet.
3. Jehoshaphat and Jehoram were reigning as co-regents in Jerusalem...so
Elijah could still send a letter to Jehoram will Jehoshapat was still
king,
too.
Anyone know of other reasonable possibilities? Thanks. :)
