Hello,
Reading in 1Chronicles 13:13 today, how David let the ark stay in the
house
of "Obed-Edom the Gittite"...later in 15:24, we see Obed-Edom was
doorkeeper
for the ark--which probably would make him a member of the tribe of Levi.
Fine and dandy. But we also see in 2 Samuel 21:19 and 1 Chronicles 20:5 a
reference to "Goliath" as a Gittite. And there is another character
called
Ittai who is a Gittite.
Wouldn't it be unlikely a non-Hebrew would be entrusted with the ark? So
here are the possible answers I've come up with.
1. The Obed-Edom of 15:24 isn't the same Obed-Edom of 13:13. (unlikely,
but
possible, eh?)...still a problem, but if the ark was guarded by Israelites
while being left at Obed-Edom's house, then it could still be left
there....
2. A "Gittite" is not necessarily indicative of ethnicity or race, but
perhaps an inhabitant of a region or city....so any person who lived in or
around "Gitti" (Gath?) could be a Gittite.
3. Obed-Edom might have been a heathen who became a member of the
community.
Right now I'm leaning toward #2.
Anyone else have knowledge about the identity of the "Gittites"?
Thanks.
Bob
