One could say there was a conscious choice involved in my case, though it
was not about "believing" in the sense one would normally suspect.

There came that one day when suddenly an unexpected path was visible to
me,
so to say. The question was whether I should walk down that path.

I refuse to say "I chose to believe" because that would probably sound too
much like "I threw reason totally out of the window"... but I did choose
to
give this stuff, strictly speaking, the benefit of the doubt (remember
that
I don't claim to have any objective evidence for the existence of the
deities I honor today) and assume the position of "well, as long as others
aren't drawn into it and it doesn't do harm to me, why not try it out and
see if it makes me feel better or worse?".
