I think that I "sort of" chose to be an atheist.  I say sort of because
for 
me, there just came a point where I accepted my lack of belief and
realized 
that I was an atheist.

Before that, I was a christian because that had been chosen for me by my 
parents.  They were, and continue to be, fairly devout christians.  I
became 
an atheist sometime in my early 20s, but it wasn't an easy 
choice/realization and I struggled with it for awhile.
