Won't work. Gas prices are set by supply and demand. Demand has been
rising because the OPEC nations have cut down on production since at
least 2005.
Even if the government were to drop the gas taxes, the oil companies
are not obliged to drop the price of gas correspondingly since people
are willing to pay the current price to get gas. Therefore, the only
thing that happens by dropping the taxes is that the gas company CEO's
get a nice little windfall.
Plus, those gas taxes go to fixing roads, repairing and inspecting
bridges and other trans****tation infrastructure. The government needs
that money to ensure the roads are as safe as they can make them
(other drivers notwithstanding).
