It would only help in the short run Bob. Right now some of us are
parked including me. I haven't run in 2 weeks now, and the company
I'm driving for may not put the rigs back on the road. Whether we
run or not we have to do something soon about this trans****tation
mess because if it gets really bad the economy could end up hanging
by a thread. Right now the railroads are taking more than they can
handle freight wise, and they can't take on more business without
new right of ways and track, so that to will help to create a bottleneck
in demand and supply. people won't be able to get their meds without
ordering them a month and a half in advance, food or anything else.

The smaller trucking companies are going out of business already
and the bigger ones like J.B. Hunt and the ugly orange truck company
Schneider national and Werner are picking up the slack. The fuel and
the atmosphere aren't going to hold out forever. Eventually we are going
to need to go to hydrogen or electric trans****tation systems to move
freight. At present, their isn't anything available other than hydrogen
that rivals the power per inch that we are getting from fossil fuels,
but the supply isn't inexhaustible. Jeff Glazier of Glazier Petroleum
here has said that supplies have to reach a critical point in the near
future, and the technology for drilling wells at angles isn't sound
yet. It might be another twenty years before we see any appreciable
progress in that area, if that soon.

We are already feeling the crunch here. I'm going back to drive away
for a few weeks delivering utility trucks on a contract basis, for as
long as that holds out. Miller Trucking stopped paying the independents
the fuel surcharge so we have to buy the fuel to move the trucks out of
our run earnings. A few drivers have canceled contracts over this,
but it is the only way Miller can keep a float and honor it's contracts
with Altec and Homestead Motor Coach. The food costs in Kansas have shot
up by 30% over the last 5 weeks and are still climbing. I'm not certain
if there is an industry that the oil barons aren't raping and pillaging
yet. I would be surprised if there WAS one left untouched !

I'll have to make twice as many runs to make an appreciable amount of
money, and the trans****tation costs are out of line. The last time I had
to fly on short notice it cost me $820.00 for a flight one way from a
San Diego drop off to Kansas City International, and that was last year
in august. From now on I'm taking a national rental or the worst of all,
a greyhound bus as a last resort. The trip from San Diego to Kc was
okay, but I had to take the greyhound home, and it was a nightmare. The
bus driver came to work drunk, and they didn't have another driver to
take the bus so everyone had to spend the night in the terminal. That
was horrible. I slept with one eye open all night. I've never been so
tired in my life, and I'm not in any hurry to ride greyhound again.
