Certainly we did nothing to earn the need for salvation. God downgraded
all of creation without our permission. But God is slack as men call very
slack and God enjoys teasing us.

Was it a gift of God that caused us to need salvation?

The two are not in same class. Evolution is science. Creation is
mythology.
