Spong is a self-proclaimed atheist, Pete.  As for what Mark is talking
about 
as fact, his source is largely the works of a few modern NT scholars, many

from the now infamous "Jesus Seminar".  You will note Mark's "either/or" 
approach to the issue of why the gospels were written?  They can't, 
according to his mind set, have been written to make more converts BY 
informing them of Jesus' life.  They must have been written for one or the

other purposes, and since we know they were written to make converts, we 
should, according to this spurious line of criticism, jettison any 
consideration of their historical accuracy.

The truth is, the majority of NT scholars do not ascribe to what Mark is 
relating as if it were fact.  They certainly do not follow Robert Funk's 
notion that out of John's entire gospel, only three snippets of Jesus' 
recorded utterances were things He actually said.

I find I can only let Mark try to fill your sock with so much manure and 
stay silent.  When he arrives at the point of mischaracterizing fringe NT 
scholar****p as "fact", it's time to speak up.
