HMAS Australia (Cruiser - heavily damaged) and HMAS Hobart (Light 
Cruiser) with sup****t craft were there as sup****t for the US fleet. US 
and Aussie pilots flew bombers from Nth Qld (definitely from Mareeba - 
possibly Townsville).

My father saw some of the torn up US bombers landing in Mareeba on 
returning from the battle when he was a boy.
