Hello,
The Bible tells us how. Just follow the example of the ancient Bereans
that is recorded in the Bible for our benefit. Ac 17:11,
"Now the Bereans were of more noble character than the Thessalonians,
for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the
Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true." (NIV)
Notice here that God wants us to look up in the "Scriptures" any
religious teachings being told to us, to see if they are really "true"
or not.
For example, many churches today, and in the past, sup****t the
politicians call to wars. They willingly permit and/or encourage their
flocks to participate in wars. Yet Jesus told his true servants how to
treat their enemies. Mt 5:44,
"But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute
you," (NASB)
Thus if a person's church tells them God approves of them to go to war
and pick up war weapons to kill their enemies, according to Ac 17:11
just compare their words to what the "Scriptures" tell us, such as Mt
5:44. Then you will see if their words are lies and not the truth. If
they are lies, then you would be in that "cult" you mentioned above,
and not the true "one faith" religion that the Bible talks about. (see
Eph 4:5)
