Indeed, there wasn't.  That's my point.   In apologists' accounts
of the massacre there is no accounting for this devotion to the prophet
as a driving force.

"the historical, political, and religious climate" from an apologists
POV is the idea that the Mormons were relentlessly persecuted,
had violence set upon them due to their religious beliefs.     This
POV completely ignores the violence encoded into the Mormon
belief system of the day,  and the actions of the Mormons themselves
to provoke the response.
