That would be Majorca (Major, Minor, geddit? They're very close
together and Majorca's bigger, though neither is particularly close to
CA, so I don't geddit all.), which is home of ****t Mahon and it's where
"Lucky" Jack Aubrey got his first command 200 years ago this year, as
well as where he met Dr. Stephen Maturin, the Catalonian spy for HMSS
and, not least, an excellent royal navy surgeon.
It has been variously possessed by the French, the Spanish, and the
English, and probably the Moors if you go back far enough, and therefore
there's a fair chance they will refuse to understand you in any language
as you ask them for directions, or to convey demands while you ransom
their island.
