handle /n./
1. [from CB slang] An electronic pseudonym; a `nom de guerre' intended to
conceal the user's true identity. Network and BBS handles function as the
same sort of simultaneous concealment and display one finds on Citizen's
Band radio, from which the term was adopted. Use of grandiose handles is
characteristic of warez d00dz, crackers, weenies, spods, and other lower
forms of network life; true hackers travel on their own reputations
rather than invented legendry. Compare nick. .
-- The New Hacker's Dictionary
The use extends considerably beyond 1970's trucking. While the tone
above suggests something of a negativity towards "handles", it should be
pointed out that this *is* the Hacker's Dictionary, and hackers, more
than almost anyone, are as a group almost violently opposed to asinine
behaviour or those who engage in it - which is to say, warez d00dz,
crackers, weenies, spods and other lower forms of network life - as
opposed to the more generalized usage by Joe Sixpack, about whom the
hacker is very likely to be almost entirely apathetic.
I'm sure this will all fly completely over your head, but then, what can
one expect from a read-only user?
