Which is NOT the same thing as assuming there wasn't or couldn't have been

one.  That's my only point: absolute statements where no information
exists 
are as misguided one way as they are the other.

That's because the question of whether the *man* existed is pretty much an

equal yes/no probability.  The probabilities determining whether or not 
such a man might have been God would be very much less balanced.
