So what was the purpose of giving us free will in the first place?  Why 
does God require for us to be always on the verge of self-damnation, 
through the use of something freely given to us?

How is it possible for man to have known better, being in a state of 
innocence and thereby incapable of such a judgement?

According to your mythology, we can never do the same thing again.  You 
can't unring a bell.  We can never again be in that original state of 
innocence.
