There are hundreds of different religious beliefs, but in terms of
evidence offered thus far, the actual count of gods appears to be zero.

That should read "the real god".  "God" is a proper noun, applied to a
particular god concept.  Other such proper nouns include Ra and Odin and
Thor, each proper noun belonging to a different god concept.

How do we know if any of these are real?  Easy: we wait for someone to say
"god number 93 is real" and we ask them to present the evidence.  When
they don't - and they never do - we snicker at them and send them on their
way.  If one of them ever does come up with some actual evidence that
their god concept is real, then you'll have at least some reason to think
you've found _a_ real one - there could be many.

I wouldn't hold your breath, though.  Christianity alone has had an
estimated trillion man-years' worth of belief involved in it and hasn't
come up with a shred of a hint of a bit of evidence to show their god
concept is real.  In any other endeavour, after that much wasted effort,
people would clue in and write it off as a colossal waste of time, but for
some reason these folks keep thinking it'll happen any time now, just
wait.

Ever read up on some of them?  Take a gander at the Bible sometime.  The
god ****trayed there is an evil, sadistic, psychotic monster who absolutely
*loves* playing games involving the torment of his supposed creations.  He
rigs games so they'll fail, then punishes them when they do.  He wiped out
virtually all of them at one point in a mass annihilation that makes
anything humans have done look downright philanthropic by comparison.  He
punishes all for the crimes of a few.  He sets them up to suffer
eternally, which makes no sense except if he's a sadist.

Why would he let his creations be so misled?  Why not?  He's done pretty
much anything else you can think of to torment them.

Well, if you buy the story, that is.  Fortunately, there has been
absolutely no reason whatsoever offered to take the story seriously. 
Chalk it up as one more piece of not terribly good horror fiction and that
pretty much explains it.
