Where we are different is that we atheists don't expect that the Universe
comes with a built in complaint department, whom we expect to be
accountable to us for our petty grievances and misfortunes. If you start
with the premise that an all-powerful God exists, and He loves and cares
about YOU, you have a lot of disappointment to account for, as your
paragraph describes. However, if you start with the premise that the
Universe doesn't owe you squat, and you are only here because of
the extremely fortuitous self-organizing properties of the matter this
Universe is made of, then the ups and downs of life are not surprising or
offensive. You can better appreciate that our very existence is a piece
of amazing good luck, and the little bits of bad luck here and there are
not such a big deal.
