Bat Cave

by "Thomas Keske" <ptkeske@[EMAIL PROTECTED] > May 14, 2008 at 08:35 PM

BAT CAVE

No one seems curious how they died, that way-
As if things like this happen every Tuesday...

Scores of fallen students hanging upside-down,
asleep in caves, or stacked in piles,
with fungi sprouting from their chest cavities

What strange insects wrap their dead eggs in cocoons,
in a dry-rot woof of thin white threads
and make cannon fodder of their young?

A peculiar way to die.

Perhaps it was a Science Fair project,
gone tragically awry

A gene sequence lacking controls and conscience
became a dream sequence of unintended consequence

Youthful idealism is so easily confused,
It rarely occurs to them, that they are being used

They should have majored in the History
of flag-draped waxen faces and frozen expressions,
left lying on battlegrounds, to wonder for eternity
how the war and the wheat fields were lost

Discarded dolls with cats-eye marbles for eyes,
getting bed-sores from the hard mattress
on which they lie

Armies of dull, staring faces,
like neat rows of corn stalks rotting,
dead with green stains around the mouth
from trying to eat the grass

Voted most likely to become the clowns of the class

A mysterious illness is sickening and killing thousands of
hibernating bats in New York and Vermont, baffling scientists
who fear that tens of thousands more may be dying in abandoned
mines and dark caves throughout the Northeast.

Humans are not believed to be at risk from the disease, but the
death of large numbers of bats could indirectly affect New
Englanders: Bats devour crop pests, midges, and mosquitoes.

"I've studied bats for 40-something years, and I've never seen
anything like this; it's alarming," said Thomas Kunz, a
preeminent bat researcher at Boston University. "It's
frustrating and perplexing, because we don't know what it is and
we don't know how to control it."

The US Fish and Wildlife Service warned the public in the last
week to keep out of caves and mines in New York and Vermont
because humans might be inadvertently spreading the unknown
pathogen. The National Speleological Society has closed all
caves it owns in New York and Pennsylvania, and other caving
organizations have urged people to avoid places where bats may
hibernate in the Northeast.

No dead or diseased bats have yet been found in Massachusetts,
but state officials are organizing an expedition in coming weeks
to look for sick bats in four long-closed Western Massachusetts
mines. Those mines are off-limits to the public, and bats
hibernate in only a few tiny caves in the state, mostly on
private land.

The disease was first discovered in a cave near Albany, N.Y., in
January 2007 and was soon found in three more within 7 miles. In
March, officials at the New York Department of Environmental
Conservation determined that as many as 11,000 bats had died
from the disease, dubbed "white nose syndrome" because of a
flaky white fungus on the nose of many of the sick and dead bats.

Scientists do not yet know if the fungus is a cause of the
illness or an effect. Some of the sick bats behaved oddly,
clustering near the entrance of New York caves, flying in winter
when they should have been sleeping and cra****ng into snow banks.

Scientists hoped that last year's outbreak was an anomaly. But
in the last two weeks, it has become clear that the disease has
returned and is spreading. Sick bats have now been found in
caves 135 miles apart. Sick bats have been seen again in the
original four caves, plus four others in New York, including one
discovered yesterday. Bats in a western Vermont cave are also
sick.

Researchers have found a small number of dead bats this year.
But based on last year's experience, they expect many more to
suc***b around March.

Scientists say they are extraordinarily concerned because the
disease is already affecting four species - including the
Indiana bat, recognized by the federal government as an
endangered species - and mortality has reached as high as 97
percent in some caves.

Sheila Lynch, a 23-year-old college student from Quincy, was
doing plant cell research in a cave in Texas last July when the
unthinkable happened. Something she touched or came into contact
with infected her with a powerful toxin. She could have been
bitten. No one knows for sure.

<Poet's footnote:

plant cell research in a cave?

Near the "entrance to a cave", maybe.
Inside a cave, unlikely. Put 2 and 2 together,
with bats dying in caves, and it ought to raise
of question of possible human susceptibility,
to infected bats, to fungi, to something.

But then again, there was a curious lack
of curiosity concerning the whole situation >

------------------------------------------------------------------
Whatever it was, it made her very sick. She returned to her
family in Quincy, and died a few days later.

"She was sick, she got better, and then she passed away very
suddenly," said her sister, Elizabeth. "In a lot of ways, the
shock is still there."

Tests for the toxic agent have not yet produced answers about
what Sheila Lynch encountered in her biology work on that ill-
fated trip, her sister said.

But Sheila Lynch's memory lives on. This week, Boston University's
School of Education is dedicating to Lynch a two-day program
on "The Ethics of Caring".

"I was already firmly convinced, Watson, that there were not
three separate mysteries here, but only one, and that if I could
read the Musgrave Ritual aright I should hold in my hand the
clue which would lead me to the truth concerning both the butler
Brunton and the maid Howells." So said Sherlock Holmes in a
brilliantly clear and concise summary of this week's story.

Speaking of faults, there are three facets of this case that I
would like to bring up for discussion. First, what was the cause
of Brunton's death? The butler's body was discovered about a
week after he disappeared - too short a time span for him to
have died from lack or food or even from lack of water. Holmes
seems to have believed that Brunton suffocated, but did a
postmortem confirm this? Was the chamber airtight when the stone
was in place? And since there were fungi there, perhaps a
biologist among the Hounds could confirm this point: can fungi
live and grow without oxygen?

Second, why did "some months" elapse between Brunton's question
about the elm tree and his descent into the treasure chamber?
Did it take him that long to figure out the rest of the Ritual?
Did it take him that long to patch things up with Rachel Howells?

Third, if Musgrave made no effort to conceal the Ritual, did it
take the supposedly first-rate intellect of Brunton fully twenty
years to figure it out?

Sherlock & Sherlock (1959) observed that decomposed vegetable
material or dry bovine feces presented better results for
rearing L. longipalpis. For this reason such materials should be
aged in incubator during some days before being used in diets
for rearing flebotomine larva (Sherlock & Sherlock, 1972).

Best results for L. longipalpis and L. intermedia were obtained
with aged food (Table 1). This diet differs from all others
because it has humus, obtained by decomposition of the mixture
with intensive fungi growth, which seems to make it more
nutritious and healthy for rearing phlebotomine larva

The following diets were tested: industrialized food for rabbit,
dogs, hamsters and aquarium fishes; liver powder, cooked lettuce,
wheat germ, beer yeast, oat, wheat bran and a variation of a
diet developed by Young et al.

It is not clear if the presence of fungi in the diets is
beneficial or not for phlebotomine larva although it has been
observed that larva of these insects usually feed on fungi and
their risk in presence of these microorganisms is higher during
first instars. It is possible that these larvae as detritivores
can get nutrients from fungi, although they have some risks
searching for this type of food, mainly in environments with
high levels of fungi proliferation specially during their first
instars.

The Case of the Missing Anurans
Suggested Grades: 5-8

Concepts
Requirements for survival

Catalyst Question
Where have all the frogs gone?
Background

My name is Sheerluck Biomes. One Sunday afternoon, I was sitting
in my favorite chair reading the newspaper. With me on this day
was my assistant, Dr. Newt Watson. While reading the paper, I
saw an article about the decline in amphibian populations, also
known as frogs, toads, and salamanders.

It did not take long for Dr. Watson and me to discover that an
investigation of this type was an enormous undertaking. So we
decided to concentrate our investigation only on frogs and toads
also called "anurans." We decided to call this "The Case of the
Missing Anurans."

A proper inquiry into this situation would require the services
of some top investigators. They would be responsible for
delving into the different aspects of this case to form a
complete picture for the solution of this mystery.

Toads also have toxins located in parotoid glands behind the
head, which can release these toxins when the toads are
threatened.

But anurans are part of the chain of life and natural predation
should not be a large factor in their declining populations in
such a short period of time, otherwise amphibians would have
died out millions of years ago. Yet they survived many global
catastrophes for hundreds of millions of years.

What about unnatural predation (introduction of non-native
species, etc.)?

Pathogens?
Parasites and Fungi

Various pathogen theories have been put forward as playing a
role in declining anuran populations. The pathogens may include
some types of parasites or fungi.

Could the scientists trans****t the fungus on their research
equipment or even on their boots? Well, this is what the
scientists now fear- that in their quest to find an answer to
declining frog populations they have trans****ted this fungus
from infected to pristine areas. Do you think this is possible?
Why/why not?

So, how do all these clues play out in this mystery? Let's
investigate and see!

Ants Are Experienced Fungus Farmers

ScienceDaily (Mar. 25, 2008) ? It turns out ants, like humans,
are true farmers. The difference is that ants are farming fungus.

Agriculture is very rare in the animal world," said Schultz. "We
only know of four animal groups that have discovered agriculture:
ants, termites, bark beetles and humans. By studying certain
fungus-growing ants, which our study indicates are almost like '
living fossils,' we might be able to better understand steps
involved in the evolution of ant agriculture."

Other lights disoriented the bats, and some crashed into

Last fall, a team of scientists tied bats to the deadly SARS
outbreaks. Bats in China, they said, are likely where the
virus hides between human outbreaks. Then, in December,
another group of researchers suggested that bats in Africa
serve as a reservoir for the vicious virus for Ebola
hemorrhagic fever, which causes its human victims to bleed
to death. Bats have also been definitively tied to two other
recently discovered viruses that are lethal to humans: Nipah
and Hendra.
But as researchers have worked to uncover the
mysterious links between bats and these emerging viruses,
they say they have stumbled upon an even wilier culprit
working behind the scenes: humans.

In December, a different group of researchers linked fruit
bats to the dreaded Ebola virus. Outbreaks of the disease in
humans have been associated with dramatic outbreaks
among chimpanzees and gorillas. The team, working in
Gabon and the Republic of Congo, captured various animals
near the bodies of chimpanzees and gorillas. They then
looked for signs of Ebola virus. From this, the team found
three different species of bats with antibodies to the virus,
according to a paper in the journal Nature. Bats are now the
leading suspect as the Ebola virus reservoir, but the case
against them remains controversial, according to Jens Kuhn,
an Ebola specialist at Harvard Medical School. It is thought
that changes in human activity are behind the Ebola
outbreaks -- such as new mining operations deep in forests
and the eating of primate meat -- Kuhn said, but nobody
knows the true origin.

One study, published in December in the journal
Emerging Infectious Diseases, found that bats are involved
in fewer of the world's emerging viruses than other groups of
animals. But with their role becoming clear in several
particularly nasty viruses, scientists have been pu****ng to
better understand bats and their role in carrying disease. At

http://www.maljonicsdreams.com/Dream_Spells/fairycircles.htm

Are these rings in the grass created by the little people or are
they caused by fungi?

While crop circles appear as large rings in fields of wheat, a
fairy circle is a smaller affair visible in grass. Sometimes the
ring is formed by dead grass or bare earth, or it may be made by
a circle of healthier taller grass.

Throughout history various myths have been associated with fairy
circles. In the 17th century country folk believed they were
made by fairies dancing in circles, to wander into one would
result in an overnight trip to fairyland - returning to find
twenty years had passed.

Another legend had it that the mysterious rings were caused by
fairies forcing some poor unfortunate to dance in a circle until
he was rescued.

Fairy rings are common all over the UK. In the Lake District
some are thought to be about six hundred years old. In France
one is seven hundred years old and half a mile across. The
French call them witches' rings.

In Holland it was thought the rings were made by the Devil as he
stole milk from cows he would put down his huge churn making a
circle in the grass. In Denmark they believed the rings were
burnt into the earth by dancing elves.

In 1792 the circles were officially identified as a fungal
growth pattern. A fungus grows out from the middle of a ring,
which dies off and leaves only the outer ring behind. Some
species of fungi prevent water getting into the ground, hence
the bare earth.

However not everyone accepts the scientific explanation.
Sherlock Holmes author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was a diehard
fairy fan. He said the rings may be caused by mushrooms but were
definitely used by the little folk to dance in.

The strangest rings are probably those in Namibia where circles
of parched earth occur inside which nothing grows. Whether
mushrooms or fairies created these rings is still a mystery and
they continue to defy scientific explanation.

Scientists in Namibia are considering an extensive national and

life and survival of the most abundant species of the Acacia
tree.

Studies over several months have shown that the bizarre
outgrowths are caused by a highly infectious fungus called
Alternaria tenuissima.

The fungus is cosmopolitan and occurs in many hosts including
humans, on which it has been known to cause cornea (eye)
infections and asthmatic attacks.

Paramecium to a secondary role. A precedent for the displacement
of an organismic technology by that of a more tractable relative
is provided by the example in the ascomycetes; the pioneer
Neuros****a led Beadle and Tatum to the one gene: one enzyme
formulation, and the Nobel Prize, but the work horse of fungal
genetics in the era of molecular genetics is the budding yeast,
Saccharomyces cerevisiae , that grows more conveniently in
liquid medium.

The mouse genetics industry precludes the extensive use of
guinea pigs. Another explanation for the fading of Paramecium
genetics, and one that I have entertained myself, finds
Paramecium a victim of the Cold War and the tar-brush of Lysenko.
Sonneborn was obviously concerned with being labeled a heretic,
contaminated with political improprieties as were J. B. S.
Haldane, J. Brachet, and some other European left-wing
sympathizers. I am less inclined to give credence to that
interpretation now, however. Political nonconformists - such as
Richard Lewontin - seem not to be punished severely so long as
their scientific work seems uncontaminated. Certainly organisms
have tem****arily lost scientific credibility when they have been
misused for inappropriate personal or theoretical purposes. One
remembers, for example, Carl Lindegren's irreproducible studies
with Neuros****a, and Franz Moewus' imaginative adventures with
Chlamydomonas. In both cases the organisms recovered their
utility, though the biologists who misused them have been
stripped from the canonical records. To the best of my knowledge,
however, no one has seriously questioned Sonneborn's scientific
integrity or doubted the reproducibility of his work.

The Saharan Butterflies

I was born in Abingdon, Virginia, a small town in the mountains
near the Tennessee border, on October 10, 1925, the second son
of Pearl Ledbetter and Thomas Grady Nanney

The auspicious cir***stances attending my birth were described
to me in a letter written by Pearl

According to my mother's letter, Dad appealed to the Almighty,
running down the street screaming "Lordy, Lordy, Lordy. Somebody
help me. My wife is having a baby. My house is on fire. My phone
won't work. My car won't start. Lordy, Lordy, Lordy. Won't
somebody help me!" According to the "offical" account, help
materialized, and David appeared without obvious complications
at precisely 10 minutes after 10 o'clock, on the 10th day of the
10th month of 1925.

I don't have any memories of life in Virginia, except as a fly-
by visitor in the 30s as my parents went back to the Blue Ridge
every summer to keep in tenuous touch with relatives.

In the far South many of the Indians and many escaped black
slaves had retreated into the untamed lands of the Florida
Territory, but most of them were rounded up by federal forces
under General Andrew Jackson and marched westward.

Seminole Indians had lived in intimate but ambiguous association
with blacks in Florida, and were moved together to the "Seminole
Nation" in Oklahoma Territory. Wewoka, in the wooded eastern
part of the state, was the capital of that nation. The related
Creek Indians were deposited near-by. The "Black Seminoles"
developed a settlement down on Little River, where their
cir***stances were even more strained than in Wewoka. The Creek
Indians periodically made raids on the Black Seminoles

Frano American Relations

In 1950, Andre Lwoff , at the Institut Pasteur in Paris
published a little book called Problems of Morphogenesis in
Ciliates: The Kinetosomes in Development, Reproduction and
Evolution. The book was based on the Dunham lectures that Lwoff
had given at Harvard University in 1947-48

By 1950 the struggle between the nucleus and the cytoplasm had
taken on political overtones, not totally independent of the
international cooling with the Cold War, and the domestic
warming with Joseph McCarthy and the Red Scare.

One day Sol called me into his laboratory in great excitement.
His "spy" in Paris had re****ted that the next Nobel Prize was to
be given to Jacob, Monod, and Spiegelman. Charles de Gaulle had
decided that France needed a Prize, and had appointed a
commission to determine the most promising work to be proposed.
His commission re****ted that the research most likely to be
successful was the work at the Pasteur Institute on the control
of gene expression. Although such a formulation could not
produce a purely French prize, De Gaulle had accepted the
imperfect package, and had invited the Swedish Academy to be
wined and dined in Paris. Spiegelman's re****teur believed it was
a done deal. But when the prize in physiology and medicine was
announced that year bypassed molecular genetics entirely and was
awarded in another area.

Bloomington Dramatis Personae

Though Indiana University was responding to a national challenge
to provide augmented educational op****tunities, it responded in
distinctive ways. Much of its success was attributable to the
skills of Herman B. Wells who had just been elevated to the
Presidency from his office as Dean of the Business School.

The final chapter in my involvement with professional genetics
societies came in 1985. The annual meeting of the GSA was
scheduled on the campus of the University of Illinois, in Urbana,
and I was asked to chair the local Program Committee for the
meeting. The committee's obligations included the recommendation
of a number of symposia on topics of wide interest and with
popular speakers. The list of symposia was to be submitted
personally to the governing board of the GSA at a meeting in
Boston MA.

At the meeting of the governing board in Boston, I met a stone
wall. None of the board members had ever heard of the American
eugenics movement, or of the related conflicts over involuntary
sterilization, and racial biases in immigration policy. One of
the board members suggested that the story was a fabrication.
They adamantly opposed enlisting historians and philosophers to
talk about genetics. Their final judgement was that, even if my
summary were historically correct, the eugenics movement should
not be discussed in a public forum. Its disclosure could only
damage the profession. The board disapproved this symposium
topic. And I resigned from the program committee.

Sonneborn began a third set of breeding studies, in this case
involving responses to antiserum induced by injecting paramecia
into rabbits. Strain A cells were immobilized in dilute
antiserum prepared against it, but strain B cells would not.
Strain B, but not strain A cells, were immobilized by anti-B
serum.

A second set of studies was triggered by the observation that
when stocks of variety 4 from different origins were mixed,
those from one source were killed by some toxic substance
produced by the other. Killers and sensitives could be induced
to conjugate without unilateral death under special conditions,
and the mode of hereditary transmission could be *****sed.
Curiously, the exconjugant killer exconjugant produced a killer
clone and the sensitive exconjugant gave a sensitive clone.
Again, when cytoplasmic bridges were observed (or induced), both
exconjugant clones were found to be killers.

The killer-sensitive distinction involved the cytoplasm in some
unexplained way; the nucleus did not seem to be in direct
control of this trait, even though a nuclear gene, K, was
essential for its manifestation.

The issues with respect to the Sonneborn laboratory, however,
were not resolved by a rationalization of the killer story.
Sonneborn was unwilling to sweep the mating type and s*****ype
phenomena under the same rug as the killer phenomena, and to
dismiss them as irrelevant in the discussion of cellular
governance; what is the role of the cytoplasm in the
exploitation of multiple capabilities in the heterogeneous
microbial environment"

Muller may have been displaying some organismic envy as
microbial genetics began to move into the spot light. At this
time Seymour Benzer was doing remarkable genetic tricks with T4
bacteriophage at Purdue

Fortunately, Jennings had obtained from private sources a long
term grant for the sup****t of genetic studies on Paramecium, and
these funds allowed Sonneborn to continue his research career,
if he was willing to study paramecia. Ironically, the funds came
from the Rockefeller Foundation, an agency whose interests in
genetics originated in its founders' approval of the American
eugenics program. Yet the funds sup****ted the laboratory of the
chief American opponent of the eugenics movement, and they
provided the resources to nurture the development of an
Ashkenazi Jew, at a time American higher education was
significantly biased against Jews

The career of T. M. Sonneborn is an interesting study in its
cir***stantial trajectory. I assume that his family came to
America in the later 1800s among the escapees of Russian pogroms.

The Irish Potato Blight

(Pretend you are standing in front of St. Patrick's Psychiatric
Hospital, Dublin, founded by a bequest from Jonathan Swift)

The first symptoms of the blight included brown spots on plant
leaves and damp spots on the tuber that spread quickly
throughout the tissue. Potatoes rotted in the field and in
storage. Late blight destroyed potato plants and was the
principal cause of what came to be known as the Irish Potato
Famine. The devastating plant disease wiped out potato crops in
successive years of 1845, 1846, and again in 1848, the worst
year being "Black '47," but food shortages continued for several
more years. Is the potato blight a worry of the past? In a way,
yes, because most people have more varied diets that the Irish
of the late 1840s. There is, however, renewed worry about the
introduction of new strains of the fungus-like pathogen that
make ***ual reproduction possible. Recombination of genetic
material during ***ual reproduction may overcome the resistance
of the many varieties of potatoes developed by plant breeders
since the original outbreak.

The first objection is that of injury to the public health from
miasmata arising from the wood. Whether such injury actually
does occur is very questionable - but there is no need of
mooting the question, since all admit that the source of miasma
(decay) can be prevented. It is demonstrated that by the process
very improperly called Kyanizing (since Kyan has not the
slightest claim to the invention) even the greenest wood may be
preserved for centuries, or if need be for a hundred, or far
more. The experiments by which this effect is, as we say,
demonstrated, have been tried in every variety of way, with
nearly identical results. Blocks properly prepared, for example,
were subjected for many years, in the fungus pit of the dockyard
at Woolwich, England, to all the known decomposing agents which
can ever naturally be brought to act against a wooden pavement,
and yet were taken from the pit, at the close of the experiments,
in as sound a condition as when originally deposited.

The preservative agent employed was that of corrosive sublimate ?
the Bi-Chloride of Mercury. Let a pound of the sublimate be
dissolved in fifteen or sixteen gallons of water, and a piece of
wood (not decayed) be immersed for seventy-two hours in the
solution, and the wood cannot afterwards be rotted. An
instantaneous mineralization can be effected, if necessary, by
injection of the fluid in vacuo into the ****es of the wood. It
is rendered much heavier, and more brittle by the process, and
has altogether a slightly metallic character.

We write this article with no books before us, and are by no
means positive about the accuracy of our details. The general
principles and facts, however, are not, we believe, matters of
dispute. We confess ourselves, therefore, at a loss to
understand how, or why it is, that a Kyanized wooden pavement to
a limited extent, has not been laid (if only by way of a forlorn-
hope-like experiment) in some of our public thoroughfares. Or
are we merely ignorant of the case ? and has the experiment been
fairly tried, and found wanting?

I have said that the sole effect of my somewhat childish
experiment --that of looking down within the tarn --had been to
deepen the first singular impression. There can be no doubt that
the consciousness of the rapid increase of my superstition --
for why should I not so term it? -- served mainly to accelerate
the increase itself. Such, I have long known, is the paradoxical
law of all sentiments having terror as a basis.

Shaking off from my spirit what must have been a dream, I
scanned more narrowly the real aspect of the building. Its
principal feature seemed to be that of an excessive antiquity.
The discoloration of ages had been great. Minute fungi
overspread the whole exterior, hanging in a fine tangled web-
work from the eaves. Yet all this was apart from any
extraordinary dilapidation. No ****tion of the masonry had fallen;
and there appeared to be a wild inconsistency between its still
perfect adaptation of parts, and the crumbling condition of the
individual stones. In this there was much that reminded me of
the specious totality of old wood-work which has rotted for long
years in some neglected vault, with no disturbance from the
breath of the external air. Beyond this indication of extensive
decay, however, the fabric gave little token of instability.

The conditions of the sentience had been here, he imagined,
fulfilled in the method of collocation of these stones -- in the
order of their arrangement, as well as in that of the many fungi
which overspread them, and of the decayed trees which stood
around -- above all, in the long undisturbed endurance of this
arrangement, and in its reduplication in the still waters of the
tarn. Its evidence --the evidence of the sentience --was to be
seen, he said, (and I here started as he spoke,) in the gradual
yet certain condensation of an atmosphere of their own about the
waters and the walls.

But the good champion Ethelred, now entering within the door,
was sore enraged and amazed to perceive no signal of the
maliceful hermit; but, in the stead thereof, a dragon of a scaly
and prodigious demeanour, and of a fiery tongue, which sate in
guard before a palace of gold, with a floor of silver; and upon
the wall there hung a ****eld of ****ning brass with this legend
enwritten --

  Who entereth herein, a conqueror hath bin;
       Who slayeth the dragon, the ****eld he shall win;

And Ethelred uplifted his mace, and struck upon the head of the
dragon, which fell before him, and gave up his pesty breath,
with a shriek so horrid and harsh, and withal so piercing, that
Ethelred had fain to close his ears with his hands against the
dreadful noise of it, the like whereof was never before heard."

Ethelred -- ha! ha! -- the breaking of the hermit's door,
and the death-cry of the dragon, and the clangour of the ****eld!
-- say, rather, the rending of her coffin, and the grating of the
iron hinges of her prison, and her struggles within the coppered
archway of the vault! Oh whither shall I fly?

Madman!" -- here he sprang furiously to his feet,
and shrieked out his syllables, as if in the effort he were
giving up his soul -- "Madman! I tell you that she now stands
without the door!"

vampires had furry feet and vampires from the Rocky Mountains
only sucked blood with their noses from the victim's ears.

One unusual feature of folklore is their greenish-white furry
skin; one theory is this is derived from fungus or mould growing
on corpses

blood can often be seen emanating from nose and mouth of a
decomposing corpse, which could give the impression that the
corpse was a vampire who had recently been drinking blood.

The commonest methods of extirpation of vampires are beheading
the suspected corpse, taking out the heart, impaling the corpse
with a white-thorn stake (in Russia an aspen), and burning it.

And in Russian mythology, vampires were said to have once been
witches while they were living, or people who rebelled against
the church.

What bird pursues its shadow
Down the rolled valleys of your brain
No specialist presumes to explain.

Those fields which lie all fallow
No plough's sharp tongue can ever turn,
Whatever seeds fall there must burn

    In gay intensities of joy
Or chafe to the dark scrapings of sorrow.
No crop is looked for there tomorrow:

All is one day, the same,
As if God bid the world to exist
But for the opening of his fist

Which then closed tight and slammed,
Total and drastic as a clot.
A wild colt crops the wild weed plot.

How clearly the doctors have explained,
Although the first birds poised, they met
Their shadows, and did falter, yet

     Recover briefly, before descending:
How early the gay bats come out
To wheel and flicker and cavort.

They're already beating up gays with baseball bats around the
country! Children are going to playgrounds, they go in with
baseball bats, and they find one of these gays there, pederasts,
trying to recruit children, and they take their baseball bats
and they beat them up pretty bad. They'll kill one sooner or
later. In Chicago, they're beating up gays that are hanging
around certain schools, pederasts; children go out with baseball
bats and beat them up- which is perfectly moral; they have the
civil right to do that! It's a matter of children's civil rights!"

LaRouche has a history of making statements that reveal great
animosity toward gay people, and generally links AIDS to the gay
community in ways that are seen as bigoted. He has called for
draconian measures against persons with AIDS, and scoffed at
civil liberties and civil rights concerns, writing that people
who physically attack gay people are merely exercising their
civil rights:

"Where did this nonsense come from? Oh, we don't want to offend

lead to discrimination against gays!

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - A mysterious illness is killing tens of
thousands of honeybee colonies across the country, threatening
honey production, the livelihood of beekeepers and possibly
crops that need bees for pollination.

Discrimination

Because we *****sed discriminatory responses of each female that
completed one reproductive stage, we used the total number of
females responding to the whine-chuck in both the first and the
third phonotaxis tests (conspecific call tests) to determine the
percentage of discriminatory response within each reproductive
stage. We used a Fisher's exact test to determine whether the
pro****tion of unamplexed or postmated females displaying
discriminating responses differed from the pro****tion of females
displaying discriminating responses in the amplexed stage.

Five females behaved permissively in the unamplexed stage (16%
permissiveness; N = 31). Three of the five showed discriminatory
behavior, one did not, and one did not consistently respond in
the discrimination tests. Twelve females behaved permissively in
the amplexed stage (35% permissiveness; N = 34). Seven of the 12
showed discriminatory behavior, three did not and two did not
consistently respond in the discrimination tests. Finally, five
females behaved permissively in the postmated stage (16.7%
permissiveness; N = 30). Three of the five females showed no
discriminatory response and two did not consistently respond in
the discrimination test (Table 2.3).

IOBC wprs Bulletin Vol 22(9)

The isolated antenna of the male moth was mounted between
electrodes, the AC-amplifier switched to a long time constant
range and the enriched eluate of female glands (still 5 years
before bombykol)

This writer described in an amusing burlesque how a vulval smear
of a ***** attracts many male dogs

But I learned soon that the Bombyx gland was a more powerful
stimulus than the extract. In analogy to the electroretinogram,
I named this odor-induced electrical response of an insect
antenna "electroantennogram"

But was this now really the odor response of a "biological"
receptor or just an artifact? A critical physicist and a
physiologist of the University suspected that I was only
recording artifacts, namely electrode potentials. Such physico-
chemical odor-induced phenomena are in fact known when silver-
chloride electrodes contact saline, like the hemolymph of the
antenna.

My now serious personal problem was that these critics
were charged to judge my promotion to the rank of a lecturer at
the university. Unfortunately, the critics overlooked that my
thesis also presented the proof for a "biological" EAG:
(1) only the antenna of the male but never that of the female
moth responded to the gland odor while the antennae of both ***es
responded to other odorants; (2) an antenna can be reversibly
anaesthetized and (3), a dead but fresh antenna gives no
response. However, this unjustified critique of the two
professors sufficed for the Tubingen Faculty of Science to
reject my application. Fortunately, my findings were soon
verified and widely accepted by better informed colleagues.

But insects can also learn scent-images as is well known for
honeybees since Karl von Frisch's work (1919). More recently,
odor learning in bees and in Drosophila could be localized in
the antennal lobes and also in the higher brain areas, including
the mushroombodies

Honeybees originally im****ted from Europe are used to pollinate

A team led by Dr. Ian Lipkin, an expert in the spread of

to non-affected bees from Pennsylvania and Hawaii. They also

Onion and garlic came from the dead body of a murdered cow

When the throat was cut some blood dropped on the ground, and
became the red onion and the white onion (garlic) respectively.
So both onion and garlic originated from the throat and blood of
the demons or asuras, thus their consumption brings us closer to
tamo guna (mode of ignorance) which characterizes the nature of
the demons and thus is detrimental to bhakti.

Kamba Ramayana is a Tamil text by poet Kambar.)

Mushrooms (Mycology ? more than Fungi) : Common White (cap)
Mushrooms, "Button" ? Sam pigginess Mushrooms, are most common
for eating.

One has to be extremely careful with Mushrooms, as they can be
highly dangerous, and I don't mean the specific taking of
Psilocybe (baeocystis) Psilocybe Semilanceata (Liberty Caps) and
Amanita Muscaria (Fly Agaric) for their hallucinogenic
properties, that is the side effect, what is actually happening
is called muscimol poisoning. Similar effects can be had from a
number of Mushrooms, some are even fatal immediately in small
amounts/doses.

Mushrooms are a Fungus, that usually grows either on rotting.
Decaying vegetation, or as is common today ? grown on the stools
of horses or chickens and other such animals. Thus they although
being a vegetable are considered to be in the mode of darkness,
which is also where they are grown or found, in the dark damp
tamasic places that get little or no air or sun-light. There

But Dr. Garza-Valdes and Professor Stephen Mattingly, a
microbiologist at Texas University, have excited believers in
the shroud by finding that the cloth is covered with a barely
visible living "bioplastic'' coating of bacteria and fungi.

This, the scientists believe, developed over the centuries "like
a coral reef'' and could have skewed the 1988 carbon dating
tests.

The book details the experiments that show the "blood'' on the
shroud is ancient and contains XY chromosomes, which establishes
it as human and male.

The tests were conducted by a team headed by Dr. Victor Tryon,
director of the Centre for Advanced DNA Technology at the
University of Texas Health Science Centre.

Gene segments from the stains were cloned and the analysis
showed that the blood came from a male with an AB blood type,
common among Jewish people.

Dr. Garza-Valdes, a practising Catholic, said the placing of the
blood traces strongly indicated that the body was that of Jesus.

33. About The Holy Bible, by Robert G. Ingersoll
He knew what creeds would spring like poisonous fungi from every
text. ... He heard the groans -- saw the faces white with agony. .

www.holysmoke.org/sdhok/bible2.htm

Somebody ought to tell the truth about the Bible. The preachers
dare not, because they would be driven from their pulpits.
Professors in colleges dare not, because they would lose their
salaries. Politicians dare not. They would be defeated. Editors
dare not. They would lose subscribers. Merchants dare not,
because they might lose customers. Men of fa****on dare not,
fearing that they would lose caste. Even clerks dare not,
because they might be discharged. And so I thought I would do it
myself.

There are many millions of people who believe the Bible to be
the inspired word of God -- millions who think that this book is
staff and guide, counselor and consoler; that it fills the
present with peace and the future with hope -- millions who
believe that it is the fountain of law, Justice and mercy, and
that to its wise and benign teachings the world is indebted for
its liberty, wealth and civilization -- millions who imagine
that this book is a revelation from the wisdom and love of God
to the brain and heart of man -- millions who regard this book
as a torch that conquers the darkness of death, and pours its
radiance on another world -- a world without a tear.

They forget its ignorance and savagery, its hatred of liberty,
its religious persecution; they remember heaven, but they forget
the dungeon of eternal pain. They forget that it imprisons the
brain and corrupts the heart. They forget that it is the enemy
of intellectual freedom. Liberty is my religion. Liberty of hand
and brain -- of thought and labor, liberty is a word hated by
kings -- loathed by popes. It is a word that shatters thrones
and altars -- that leaves the crowned without subjects, and the
outstretched hand of superstition without alms. Liberty is the
blossom and fruit of justice -- the perfume of mercy. Liberty is
the seed and soil, the air and light, the dew and rain of
progress, love and joy.

If Christ was in fact God, he knew all the future. Before him
like a panorama moved the history yet to be. He knew how his
words would be interpreted. He knew what crimes, what horrors,
what infamies, would be committed in his name. He knew that the
hungry flames of persecution would climb around the limbs of
countless martyrs. He knew that; thousands and thousands of
brave men and women would languish in dungeons in darkness,
filled with pain. He knew that his church would invent and use
instruments of torture; that his followers would appeal to whip
and fagot, to chain and rack. He saw the horizon of the future
lurid with the flames of the auto da fe. He knew what creeds
would spring like poisonous fungi from every text. He saw the
ignorant sects waging war against each other. He saw thousands
of men, under the orders of priests, building prisons for their
fellow-men. He saw thousands of scaffolds dripping with the best
and bravest blood. He saw his followers using the instruments of
pain. He heard the groans -- saw the faces white with agony. He
heard the shrieks and sobs and cries of all the moaning,
martyred multitudes. He knew that commentaries would be written
on his words with swords, to be read by the light of fagots. He
knew that the Inquisition would be born of the teachings
attributed to him.

What! The bat wing nailed on the door?"

"The bat wing, decidedly. He believed it to be the token of a negro
secret society which had determined upon his death, hence my enquiries
regarding coloured men in the neighbourhood. Do you understand,
Inspector?"

Inspector Aylesbury took a large handkerchief from his pocket and blew
his nose. Replacing the handkerchief he cleared his throat, and:

"Am I to understand," he enquired, "that the late Colonel Menendez had
expected to be attacked?"

What's that you say about Waterloo, Mr. Harley?" demanded the
Inspector.

"Nothing germaine to the case," replied Harley. "It was a reference to
a battle, not to a railway station."

Inspector Aylesbury blew his nose.

"I know my job," he said. "If I had been called in there might have
been a different tale to tell. But he was a foreigner, and he paid for
his ignorance, poor fellow."

"Oh, I see. That's your attitude, is it? Very well, then. Were you, or
were you not, an enemy of the late Colonel Menendez?"

"I was."

"What's that?"

"I say I was. I hated him, and I hate him no less in death than I hated
him living."

I think that I had never seen a man so taken aback, Inspector
Aylesbury, drawing out a large handkerchief blew his nose. Replacing
the handkerchief, he produced a note-book.

"I am placing that statement on record, sir," he said.
Colin Camber inclined his head, clapped his bands, and silently Ah
Tsong entered.

The Inspector stared at him for several moments as a visitor to the Zoo
might stare at some rare animal; then:

"Your name is Ah Tsong?" he began.

"Ah Tsong," murmured the Chinaman.

"I am going to ask you to give an exact account of your movements last
night."

"No sabby."

Inspector Aylesbury cleared his throat.

"I say I wish to know exactly what you did last night. Answer me."

He understood my first question. You can't draw wool over my eyes. He
knows well enough. Are you going to answer me?" he demanded, angrily,
of the Chinaman.

"No sabby, master," he said, glancing aside at Colin Camber. "Number-
one p'licee-man gotchee no pidgin."

Interesting thoughts on the cause of this syndrome. I have not
been able to find out if the species of Fusarium fungus on the
bats has yet been identified, however, several Fusarium species
do appear to produce potent mycotoxins per the Wikipedia entry
on the fungus. One class of toxins are the Trichothecenes that
can be extremely potent and toxic (see entry below). I don't
have a theory as to the cause of this syndrome, but am watching
with great interest as more information becomes available.

Type A trichothecenes (e.g. T-2 toxin, HT-2 toxin,
Diacetoxyscirpenol) are of special interest because they are
even more toxic than the related type B trichothecenes (e.g.
Deoxynivalenol, Nivalenol, 3- and 15-Acetyldeoxynivalenol).
Their major effects - related to their concentration in the
commodity - are reduced feed uptake, vomiting and
immuno-suppression

The poisonous mushroom in Japan and China, Podostroma cornu-
damae contains six trichothecenes; Satratoxin H, Roridin E,
Verrucarin and others.

Huckabee's dangerous because he comes across as "normal" and
reasonable on the surface, until you realize that he says he
talks to God, to say nothing of some of his other dizzy ideas/

There is also the matter of his financial corruption. I wish I

pretty damning. Every bit as much sense of entitlement as
Guiliani.

Your goal here is to keep building crawlers at an ever
increasing rate until you have enough to send them all to the
"Project Base" and finish the project. Alternately, you could
simply set your nearby bases to building crawlers and shuffle
them into the Project base upon completion, but this is slightly
less efficient, although the upshot is that you don't have to
worry with eco-damage creating fungal blooms and the potential

Iran, formerly known internationally as Persia, accused Britain

In 1989 the Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini issued a death warrant

Iran's Wheat Fungus: Coincidence or Biological Warfare?
Kurt Nimmo
Truth News
March 30, 2008

Global Research re****ts:

A dangerous new fungus with the ability to destroy entire wheat
fields has been detected in Iran, the United Nations Food and
Agriculture Organization (FAO) re****ted today.

Sure, maybe it was carried by the wind ? and maybe the fungus
was introduced by man. Not so much a conspiracy theory when
history is taken into account. For instance, back in 1977, the
San Francisco Chronicle re****ted the CIA dispatched "anti-Castro
terrorists" to introduce "African swine fever virus into Cuba in
1971?. Six weeks later an outbreak of the disease forced the
slaughter of 500,000 pigs to prevent a nationwide animal
epidemic." It was so scary that the United Nations Food and
Agricultural Organization labeled the outbreak the "most
alarming event" of 1971.

It wouldn't be an isolated event. Earlier operatives introduced
a disease infecting Cuban sea-turtles, coffee crops, and sugar.
In fact, Cuba's sugar crop was the economic target of choice. In
1977, cane smut mysteriously appeared in Pil Bovine skin disease,
haemorrhagic dengue fever affecting 350,000 people, and the
introduction of haemorraghic conjunctivitis, these are just a
few of the plagues that have afflicted Cuba since the United
States declared a covert war on the country.

During his trial in New York for the assassination of Cuba's UN
ambassador, Eduardo Arocena, leader of the Cuban-exile militant
group OMEGA-7, testified that in the latter part of 1980 a ****p
traveled from Florida to Cuba with "a mission to carry some
germs to introduce them in Cuba to be used against the Soviets
and against the Cuban economy, to begin what was called chemical
war." (See William Blum, Killing Hope: U. S. Military and CIA
Interventions Since World War II.)

Is it possible the United States introduced the wheat fungus in
Iran? Considering Iran is the numero uno neocon target and
prominent neocons tell us Bush will attack the country before he
leaves office, it is more than coincidental a debilitating crop
disease has suddenly appeared. It also serves notice the attack
will be his year, as it is easier to kill somebody when he is
down.

In Ireland, 1845 brought with it the beginning of another
disaster. A fungus- Phytophthora infestans- which had spread to
Ireland from North America destroyed the crop of 1845. Much of
the Irish population had very little land on which to farm and
because produced more food per acre than other crops like wheat,

The United States was growing and in 1845 both Florida and Texas
were admitted as states.

1845 brought national fame to a poet by the name of Edgar Allan
Poe with the publication of the well-known poem The Raven in the
"New York Mirror."

Medusoid Mycelium
"The Grim Grotto, located in propinquity to Anwhistle Aquatics,
has appropriately wraithlike nomenclature, with roots in Grecian
mythology, as this conical cavern is fecund with what is perhaps
the bugaboo of the entire mycological pantheon. The Medusoid
Mycelium has a unique conducive strategy of waxing and waning:
first a brief dormant cycle in which the mycelium is nearly
invisible, and then a precipitated flowering into speckled
stalks and caps of such intense venom that it is fortunate the
grotto serves as quarantine. As the poet says,

A single s****e has such grim power
That you may die within the hour.
Is dilution simple? But of course!
Just one small dose of root of horse."

Kit Snicket writes a letter making references to both the
