That can occur through evolution - though I accept it is difficult to 
demonstrate categorically that it did. You have to remember that 
simpler organisms have very short life-spans, so get through a much 
greater number of generations in a given period of time than may be 
expected. It is the number of generations that is crucial.

I would be cautious about reading the Bible as a science text book. It
isn't.
