During a visit to the crypt of Montmartre (Paris, France) on August
15, 1534, Ignatius de Loyola and five companions made a solemn vow "to
enter upon hospital and missionary work in Jerusalem, or to go without
questioning wherever the pope might direct". This event marked the
founding of the Society of Jesus (also known as the Jesuits), a
Catholic evangelical group whose members, as confessors to kings,
exerted great influence during the period known Counter-Reformation.
