L. Ron Hubbard was a science-fiction writer (although nowhere the level
of a Heinlein or Asimov); that's why his 'religion' reads like a
second-rate science fiction story.

Fact is, he invented Scientology after a conversation with famed SF
editor John W. Campbell Jr., in which Campbell noted that one sure way
to wealth was to invent your own religion...
