Friends,
I want to be in touch with each of you to communicate the news of our
recent staff reorganization. We are reaching you as soon as possible
after the decision was announced yesterday and today to our staff. You
may have already heard about the reorganization from Cathedral people
you know or the media which re****ted the information today.
Yesterday we put a staff reorganization into effect. It meant that a
number of full and part time positions were eliminated. We are in the
process of saying good-bye to many wonderful people who have been
valuable components of our ministry - about 15% of our total employee
base of more than 200 people. There are a number of reasons for the
reorganization including that it is:
=95 a logical process resulting from the recently articulated strategic
vision and the application of the vision to current and future
Cathedral programs;
=95 an im****tant step that helps implement the vision, maintains a
balanced budget, and addresses a downturn in the economy; and
=95 a reflection of the Cathedral=92s limited resources of staff, funds,
and time in implementing programs that are closely aligned with vision
priorities.
The difficult decision of eliminating some jobs was based on function
or program area, not individual job performance. Cathedral leader****p
worked hard to put together what we hope will be received as
compassionate separation packages for departing employees. A few
employees were separated immediately; most have been invited to stay
on through June 30 if they would like. Major areas that are affected
are our retail operations, our school and family programs, and some of
our clergy positions. In spite of these changes, we remain open every
day of the year to the nation and will continue offering the number of
services a year - about 1,800.
Thank you for your volunteer service that helps extend the Cathedral=92s
ministry and mission to the city, nation, and world. As the senior
leader****p member responsible for volunteer programs, I am available
to you at (202) ...-.... to discuss this recent change. But all
department directors and senior leader****p members are here for
conversation or to answer any questions you may have.
