St. Tikhon's pilgrimage to start
The 104th annual pilgrimage to St. Tikhon of
Zadonsk Monastery in South Canaan will open
Friday at 4 p.m. with the celebration of vespers
and matins, followed by a procession with relics
of St. Tikhon and the singing of the Akathistos Hymn in his honor.
Highlights of the Memorial Day weekend events at
the oldest Orthodox Christian monastery in North
America include the traditional pilgrim's
procession to the monastery and greeting of
Metropolitan Herman and the concelebrating
hierarchs, which begins at 9:15 a.m. on May 26.
The 66th annual commencement of St. Tikhon's
Seminary will be held in the school's auditorium Saturday at 2 p.m.
This year's pilgrimage will host the holy relics
of St. Seraphim of Sarov, one of the most beloved
saints of the Orthodox Church of Russia, who is
venerated throughout the Orthodox Christian
world. A newly prepared icon of St. Seraphim will be blessed.
Saturday events include a hierarchical Divine
Liturgy at 9 a.m. and the commencement. St.
Tikhon's Seminary has 101 seminarians enrolled,
the largest enrollment in its history, the Rev.
Kowalczyk said. His Eminence, Archbishop
Seraphim, of Ottawa, Canada, will deliver the
commencement address. The vigil will be celebrated at 4.
The May 25 hierarchical Divine Liturgy will be
celebrated at 9 a.m., with vespers and matins at
4 p.m. and a grand banquet at 5 honoring the
graduating class at Genetti Manor, Dickson City.
On Memorial Day, May 26, early Divine Liturgy
will be celebrated in the monastery church at
7:30 a.m. The pilgrims' procession at 9:15 will
be followed by a hierarchical Divine Liturgy in
the pavilion sung by a choir from area parishes
under the direction of Father David Cowen. A
memorial service for all faithful departed will
be celebrated at the gravesite of His Beatitude,
the late Metropolitan Leonty, after the Divine
Liturgy. At 2 p.m., a service of intercession to
the Most Holy Mother of God with the anointing of
the sick, infirm and all pilgrims will be
celebrated at the monastery bell tower. The
pilgrimage will close with the celebration of
vespers and matins in the monastery church at 4 p.m. on May 26.
