Conferences Explore Troop Withdrawal,White House Speechwriters

On June 5 & 6, the Presidential Recordings Program will host "The Politics
of Troop Withdrawal," starting at 9:00 a.m. each day. The conference will
bring together leading scholars and journalists to examine the withdrawal
of U.S. troops from an unpopular war - both Vietnam and Iraq - and
highlight the challenges of fighting a war in the face of mounting
criticism from home and abroad. Topics to be explored include the role of
presidential decision making, the executive-legislative struggle, the
military rationale of troop withdrawal, the domestic political context,
the impact of the media and public opinion, and the historical legacy of
the withdrawal experience.

The Miller Center welcomes all U.Va. alumni returning for Reunions Weekend
June 5-8 and invites them to attend any "Politics of Troop Withdrawal"
conference sessions of interest.

The Oral History Program will host a by-invitation-only symposium of
former White House speechwriters from across various presidential
administrations, including those of Nixon, Carter, Reagan, and Clinton, on
June 20 & 21. Participants will discuss the craft of speechwriting and the
im****tance of presidential rhetoric over time.

They will be joined by Kathryn Dunn-Tenpas, Director of the Wa****ngton
Semester Program and Adjunct Associate Professor at the University of
Pennsylvania; Miller Center non-resident senior fellow Charles O. Jones,
Emeritus Professor at the University of Wisconsin; Martin Medhurst,
Distinguished Professor of Rhetoric and Communications Studies and
Professor of Political Science at Baylor University; and Andrew
Rudalevige, Associate Professor of Political Science at Dickinson College.

Members of the public are invited to watch the conference on a live
webcast at http://www.millercenter.org.
The archived webcast will also be
available.
