Why do right-wing Republicans in the U.S. praise the Pope when he says
things they agree with, like abortion, and ignore him when he says
things that they oppose? The conservatives, especially Catholic
conservatives tell liberals they should respect what the Pope says
regarding things like abortion, basically because he is Pope. Then why
don't they oppose the death penalty, support more distribution of the
wealth, not just among our own people, but to the entire world's poor,
and oppose the Iraq war? Those are also issues Pope Benedict and John
Paul talked about at length. The right-wing conservatives criticize
liberal and progressive Americans who support those things. When we
oppose war, they call us cowards or traitors. When leaders of foreign
nations criticize are foreign policy, we call them our enemy. Since we
recognize Vatican City as a nation (a ridiculous Reagan-era idea that
Congress should revoke, but of course won't), why isn't the Pope our
enemy for opposing all our unjust military conflicts?
Republican hypocrisy is endless. Kind of like the Pope himself, who met
with all those child abuse victims, promising them justice. He once
sent a memo to all the Bishops telling them to hide the child rapists
and molesters until their statute of limitations ran out. But I digress.
