For this book, the reign of the great Emperor Marcus Aurelius (who died 
A.D. 180) is considered the closing period of the early Christian time. It

came directly after the primitive church and the first apostles, so this 
collection of sources covers one century. The basic change of direction 
which led to the institutional church showed itself in numerous acute 
symptoms, the most im****tant of which we must describe here to mark the 
boundary of our period.
