At the last moment, however, the institutional church at Rome opposed this 
renewal of the Spirit. And at the same time the Montanist movement 
degenerated into a sect. As an increasingly formally organized group of 
prophets, it became narrow, legalistic, and moralistic beyond measure.
This 
reciprocal effect made the separation a turning point in the history of 
early Christianity.
