Here we are confronted with the historically necessary crisis of early 
Christian eschatology. Montanism was the last mighty eruption of an
intense 
expectation of God’s future; the Montanist prophets eagerly awaited him to

intervene and transform all conditions and relation****ps. This conviction 
and heroic faith showed itself again as they tried to regain the God-given

freedom of the Spirit, which, as promised in John’s Gospel, was to guide 
the unity of the church through the new prophecy. Originally this movement

had no intention of severing itself from the body of Christendom. On the 
contrary, it was an internal movement of the church.
