November 10 I do not think that research into biblical sources will essentially change the picture that we have of God through Bible stories. Whether we bring out an improved version of the text of one book or another, or date this or that writing either earlier or later, is not a decisive factor. John's Gospel could have been written at any time. It brings to people the deepest truths regarding the Son of Man as God's child and God as the Father. And where is the genuine godliness of people ****trayed more purely, where is the wor****p of God described more free from human forms, than in John's Gospel? The Bible has not been written to satisfy our historical curiosity. The point is always that it says something meaningful about God. In the case of Lazarus, for example, the central point is, "I am the resurrection and the life." This momentous truth is the focus of Jesus' message, framed by the events surrounding Lazarus. Whatever happened afterwards is not told. The truth that Jesus has arisen and is alive is the heart of what has to be said.
