In the hands of these teachers the old Jewish writings pointed continually 
in the same direction. These writings remained the source of knowledge for

all meetings, for all personal instruction, and for quiet, individual 
reading. Origen wanted each Christian to devote one to two hours daily to 
this. The powerful yet simple language of the scripture made a powerful 
impact on the first Christians. They were strengthened by the psalmists,
by 
the prophets, with their inspired foreknowledge of the future, by account 
of the creation of the world, by the ethical, divine power and spiritual 
clarity of the Mosaic lawgivers. Tatian, Justin, and the author of the 
Proclamation of Peter spoke for many contem****ary Christians when they 
described how they were converted to the Christian faith through these Old
