In several respects these are threatening times; and it is necessary that
we keep faith and, in particular, that we not accept the belief that war
or
anything of the sort would improve our situation. Although it is heard
among us, this word is only a form of despair which itself contributes
greatly to the chances of war. God will look into such talk. There is
absolutely no justification for war; and we can dare to trust his almighty
arm even when that seems a very risky thing to do. We can believe that he
will bring peace and, under any circumstances, send signs and wonders from
heaven to help us. We need no swords or cannon. We should live and let
live. So have mercy upon us, O Lord our God, that finally, thou wilt
create
the kingdom of peace which thou hast promised.
