Re: The Early Christians: In Their Own Words

The clarity of the divine Word, the fact of salvation, was the whole 
content of such enthusiastic experiences. At times, the light of truth 
would flow from the apostles like a visible force when the Word was 
proclaimed, the book of the law and the prophets read, or the ancient 
psalms of praise sung. Tertullian tells of a typical example: a 
prophetically gifted sister had visions prompted by the readings of 
Scripture, by the things described in song, psalm, and spiritual
discourse. 
The Word read aloud became reality before her eyes and ears. She saw the 
Lord himself and the angelic hosts, Christ’s victorious battle, and his 
return with the princely armies of heaven. Others filled with the Spirit 
saw with their own eyes how an angel prince drove demons out of a fasting 
wayfarer.
