The basis of our communal life is God and God alone. But we cannot ever say
we have acquired this basis, that we now own religion as one owns
property.
What we have must rather be given to us again each day. It is a dreadful
thought, but we can lose it at any time.
We are placed on this foundation only by God’s grace. Our faith does not
result from our natural abilities or wishful thinking. It must be given to
us by the Holy Spirit.
