"I am the Lord your God, who teaches you what
is best for you, who directs you in the way you
should go." Isaiah 48:17
God's teaching shows us how we can protect
ourselves from misfortune and harm, escape
need and error, and arrive at our true goal.
Since we always have his guidance and help,
we can go forward with certainty, sound in soul
and body. God does not teach as the world
does, in a way that can only make us clever and
able to give superficial advice, which is often
against God. What people teach each other is
not always profitable; it does not lead to true
well-being. It is more than harmful if it fosters
our human nature, increases pride, makes us
lenient toward sin, and distracts us from the
eternal and godly.
How often are young people taught only in this
manner! What is the use of our knowing a great
deal about current affairs, and what do we
benefit from it, if we never get beyond this and
are not also concerned about the soul?
Let us listen and pay attention to God's word, to
the helpful things he teaches us. Think how
much judgment we could prevent in this way!
