"The poor and needy search for water, but there
is none; their tongues are parched with thirst.
But I the Lord will answer them; I, the God of
Israel, will not forsake them." Isaiah 41:17
This passage refers to a time of great drought
and poverty, spiritually speaking, when every-
body languished, nearly fainting away. What
can we say? Aren't we living in such a time, too?
Everybody seeks comfort, help, edification,
refreshment--and cannot find them; their hearts
remain arid and empty. Nobody is satisfied,
nobody is refreshed. Each is like a thirsty person
whose tongue is parched. How terribly true this
is in our time! How needy and poor we all are!
When the need is greatest, and everything
seems lost, the Lord appears and says, "I will
hear the poor and needy; I, the God of Israel,
will not forsake them." Instead, "I will make
rivers flow on barren heights, and springs
within the valleys. I will turn the desert into
pools of water, and the parched ground into
springs" (Isaiah 41:18).
